Notes |
- Lucy Winston was born to Isaac Winston Sr. and Sarah (Dabney) Winston about 1710-20 in Hanover County, Virginia.
She married first to Cornelius Dabney, the only son of James and Ann (Sherwood) Dabney of King William County about 1720-25. They had two children: William, born about 1721-25, and Isaac, born a few years later, who died before reaching adulthood.
They lived in KIng William County on 204 acres that Cornelius inherited from his father to which was added 179.5 acres received from Lucy’s mother, Sarah (Dabney) Winston, through her brother, William Winston. Their farm was located on the Pamunkey River, where the alluvial soil was exceptionally rich, as indicated by the land’s high tax rate per acre in later land tax records.
Cornelius died before 1739. Lucy remarried to Williams Coles before 1745, when they appeared in court as representatives of Lucy’s son Isaac. Williams Coles was a younger brother of John Coles, who married Lucy’s sister, Mary Ann Winston. He was born in Ireland and emigrated to Virginia, where he settled in Hanover County and lived on a farm called Coles Hill. They had three children: Walter, Mary, and Lucy.
Williams Coles died in 1781 and Lucy Coles died in 1784.
As a sister of Sarah (Winston) Syme Henry, Lucy was an aunt of Patrick Henry and as the mother of Mary (Coles) Payne, she was the grandmother of Dolley/Dolly (Payne) Madison. She was also a great great aunt through her husband’s Coles family of Sarah Angelica (Singleton) Van Buren, daughter-in-law of 8th U. S. President Martin Van Buren, who was widowed and asked her to serve as official hostess during his four year term. [2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]
