Notes |
- Susannah Dabney was born to George Dabney I and Elizabeth (__) Dabney circa 1702 in King William County, Virginia.
She was probably the Susannah Dabney who married Francis Thornton Strother of Hanover County in 1720. Some older genealogies have stated that her parents were Corneliius Dabney II and Sarah Jennings, which is impossible because Susannah’s son, John Dabney Strother was born in 1721, the year that Cornelius and Sarah were married. Other Dabney histories have claimed that she was the daughter of an unknown John Dabney and another Sarah Jennings or a Sarah Winston without offering evidence of their existence. On the other hand, Susannah’s father, George Dabney I, lived in King William County on the Pamunkey River which forms the eastern border of Hanover County and had numerous relatives in Hanover. The closeness of Francis and Susannah’s ages and the proximity of their residences makes it very probable that Susannah, daughter of George Dabney I was Francis’s wife. Although John is a fairly common name in later Dabney generations, this writer has never encountered evidence for a John Dabney born early enough to have been Susannah’s father.
Francis Strother was born in Richmond County, now King George County, in 1700. He was living in Hanover County when his eldest son, John, was born in 1721. He was still living there in 1727 when his mother deeded slaves to him. Francis and Susannah had eleven children: John Dabney, Margaret, William, Robert, Anthony, George, Francis, Mary, Behethland, Susannah, Elizabeth.
In 1745, Francis Strother of St. Martin’s Parish, Hanover County, purchased 583 acres in St. Mark’s Parish, Orange County and moved there. When Culpeper County was created from Orange County in 1749, his area was included in the new county, where he died in 1752. His will was dated April 17, 1751 and is recorded in Culpeper Will Book A, p. 57. [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
