Notes |
- Jennings Maupin was born to John and Frances (Dabney) Maupin November 26, 1774, in Abemarle County, Virginia.
He married Sarah Miller December 28, 1797, in Orange County. She was born June 3, 1777, to Robert and Margaret (Maupin) Miller. They had eight children: Tyre, born December 26, 1800, married Jane Beadles June 15, 1824, was a distinguished editor and politician; Fannie, born February 20, 1799, married November 2, 1820, to Col. Henry Lindsey; Robert, born March 23, 1803, and died October 4, 1837; Jennings Jr., (who may have been the son “Jink” mentioned in the History and Genealogies book by W. H. Miller) born May 14, 1805, married first to Ophalis Sorrell, second to Mary Eddins, and third to Mrs. Patsy Simms; John Miller, born December 25, 1807, married first to Matilda Coles and second to Catherine Travis, became a distinguished criminal lawyer in Williamsburg; Margaret, born in 1809, died at age of two; Paschal Early, born in 1815 and died July 23, 1877, married December 22, 1835, to Frances Jane Maupin, who was born September 25, 1815, moved to Saline County, Missouri before 1850, died March 6, 1877, aged 61; Logan, born May 21, 1817, married Amanda Skinner of Maryland; W. H. Miller’s History and Genealogies lists a ninth child, “Jink,” which may be a nickname for Jennings Jr.
Jennings was listed in the Albemarle personal property tax rolls from 1807 through 1838. However, two Maupin family genealogists, Ruby G. Heard Maupin and Dorothy Maupin Shaffett, are in agreement that he died later, on Sept. 16, 1849. In the 1840 census, his aged distant cousin, Ambrose Maupin, had two elderly men aged 60-69 and 70-79 and three elderly women aged 60-69 or 70-79 in his household, among whom may have been Jennings and Sarah Maupin.
